Op de trein - On the train

When I'm off to work I spend more or less 4 hours on the train.
During that trip I always try to create my personal bubble by using my mp3 player with noise cancelling ear buds combined with  a crochet project, a book when I'm not to tired or just playing games on the tablet.
A quick check of my mails and the social media in between.
The feeling of being alone among the people can relax me a little bit.
Well, as long as we don't have to imitate the proverbial sardines in a can.

Last tuesday as well.
Alone in my small compartment on the double deck train.
Seven stops before it's mine.
Approximately 1 hour train.
We just passed the first stop when an alcohol waft reaches my nose.

I look up from what I'm doing and see 2 men, next to me in that small compartment.
Both are holding a plastic cup.
The largest of the 2 is busy uncorking a bottle of sparkling wine.
They notice me looking and they start laughing.
I think they said something, but thanks to Bose I don't hear a thing.
Grinning by myself I think: "Funny, those 2 are still celebrating New Year on the train".
Even the conductor liked the atmosphere so much he doesn't even want to check our rail pass.

Two stops along the way they have finished the bottle and I see 2 half liter cans of beer appearing in their hands.
Lager sure is a lot more marginal than bubbles...

Number 1 gets of the train and the largest remains sitting, finishing his can of beer.
Out of the corner of my eye I see his leg jumping up and down out of nervousness.

I already had an excess of smell and now I get an excess of nerves.

Always fun and cosy on the train.
I'm glad I didn't have to listen to their New Years talk.
